About the hotel
The Playhouse Hotel is housed in premises formerly known as the Central Hotel, which was the oldest of Barraba’s four pubs.
The building was constructed out of handmade brick in 1905 on a crossroads in the middle of town, and for decades was considered the town's “top” pub. In 1955, at the height of the wool boom, the building was significantly modernised by then-owners Tooth’s brewery.'
It changed hands several times again and in 2002 was purchased by Andrew Sharp, who made major repairs and renovations. As part of this project, the hotel’s disused pool hall was converted into an 80-seat studio-style theatre from which the building takes its new name. The Playhouse Hotel opened in mid-2007.
The hotel was purchased by its current owner, Rachel Bennewitz, in early 2026.
